Cindy Sherman- by Robert Trudell
Beginning life in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey as the youngest of 5 children, Cindy Sherman’s family soon moved to Huntington, New York, where she grew up. It doesn’t take an artistic family or the patience to paint to create an artist. Cindy’s focus on film drew her attention away from tedious brush skills and toward forming society’s social scenes she shares.
Her art got a start at Buffalo State College and she dove into pictorially documenting her party preparation process. In 1974 during college, she joined Charles Clough and Robert Longo to establish Hallwalls; in a converted ice packing warehouse, Hallwalls fashioned itself into a non-profit communal Contemporary Art Studio.
Cindy marked the art world with a milestone work Untitled Film Stills cataloged from 1977 to 1980. The Black & White shots place her in Movie type sets which she becomes the actress, director, makeup artist, set designer and photographer. The images let a viewer wander in its clues and create a story from them. Carefully place props, expressions and social settings lead us to write the details she leaves open.
Does Sherman condemn the characters in her photos or those outside the scene acting on the characters? In her later work, Rich Women, Women from California, Clowns and History Portraits I think she criticizes the characters in the portraits; in her Untitled Film Stills, I believe we mostly revile those outside the portrait.
Her Disasters series becomes a response to fanatic fans by drawing away from early success and creating gross pictures few would hang over a fireplace.
