102 Degree Head Shot - Movie Poster Design Project

Design a Movie Poster

Worth 150 points

Due April 24 at 6pm

Instructions:
  • You will be using both Photoshop and Illustrator to create your movie poster.  You may choose a real movie or make up a fictitious one (please nothing offensive!).
  • Your design should include a photograph that you will manipulate in Photoshop, then open in Illustrator to finish your design.
  • It should include type:  movie title, actors, and all that wonderful information at the bottom of the poster.
  • Use your imagination to create the design, using the tools of Photoshop AND Illustrator.
  • Include a short paper describing your process:  what you did in Photoshop, what you did in Illustrator (including any tools, commands, effects, filters, etc. in either applications) and how you put it together.
  • You will be submitting 4 files:  Your Photoshop file (which should at the minimum include a photograph that you have manipulated), your Illustrator file (which should be the finished design and include the imported Photoshop file), a JPEG of the final project and the short paper describing your project.
You must include in your design:
  • Photograph manipulated in Photoshop
  • Type added in Illustrator
  • Other design elements can be added in either application
Submit to Blackboard:
  • yournameFinalProject.psd
  • yournameFinalProject.ai
  • yournameFinalProject.jpg
  • A short paper describing how you created your design (1 or 2 pages)
NOTE:  This is a final project and therefore, I am expecting good work from you all.  It’s less about the actual design and more about effectively using the tools and being able to tell me what you did and how you did it.  It’s worth 150 points, which is a significant amount of points.  Don’t leave it until the last minute.

Robert Trudell’s Final Project Movie Poster design steps.

1) Imagined Movie stories and themes.

2) Conceptualized ideas. Wrote down and refined Titles and captions.

3) Inventoried Saturday’s ARTbeat 5 images and evolved movie documentary film ideas.

4) Experimented with different fonts and their perspective placement in Illustrator.

5) Placed images in standard 27×40 inch movie poster sized Photoshop document.

6) Scaled to suit.

7) Cut out images with magnetic, polygon and quick selection tools.

8.) Used softened eraser to feather Finger’s arm, Craig Fry neck and body of Pictures over Peace layer.

9) Lowered Finger’s fill amount and removed saturation. Flipped horizontal. Swapped fill & opacity level.

10) Arranged layers and image positions.

11) Asked boss for more Vacation days.

12) Chose Viner Hand ITC font.

13) Looked for background textures or images.

14) Scaled Trespass sign for background and adjusted opacity and removed saturation.

15) Selected Peace sign area and increased vibrance & saturation levels.

16) Tested styles on Craig Fry head and chose Fresco style.

17) Opened PSD file in AI using Convert to Object.

18) Titled Movie 102° Head Shot with Viner Hand ITC.

19) Matched Peace sign shape with paths and Typed on path with Pictures over Peace.

20) Researched Movie Poster Credits, Movie Credit Blocks, use Sans Serif typefaces with recommended Myriad font. Use 2pt lowered sizes for intermediate words. Condense horizontal spacing.

21) Downloaded and placed Movie Rating (eps) and Dolby Sound (ai) Logos in Credits.

22) Changed color and stroke of “Pictures over Peace” to further separate them from the Title.

23) Added black stroke and radial gradient shading to expanded Movie title.  Expanded “Pictures over Peace” characters to improve transportability.

24) Added Stars at top of poster in red, used 48pt and 72pt letters.  Changed to 36 & 72pt to make Craig smaller than Fry.

24) Added “The Desert Just Got Hotter” tag at bottom of poster in 100pt Myriad condensed italic.

25) Changed Movie Title opacity to 80% and “Pictures over Peace” to 75% with a 2pt stroke.

26) Decided I didn’t think the Movie Title looked movie like enough.  Looking for alternatives and direction.  I’m thinking of extruding, beveling. Extruded & beveled Title and Tag.

27) Noticed how “Pictures” and “over Peace” diverged in extruded text version.  Decided that could add meaning.

28) Aligned Movie Star’s Horizontal & Vertical spacing with alignment tool, then brought Ana closer to Robert.

29) Credit Block text, APRIL 21, SONY PICTURES PRESENTS A ROBERT TRUDELL DOCUMENTARY FILM IN ASSOCIATION WITH ARIZONA ONLINE PRODUCTIONS

STARRING ROBERT TRUDELL, ANA PADILLA & CRAIG FRY CASTING BY ARIZONA WESTERN COLLEGE MUSIC BY TONE DEF COSTUME DESIGNER CINDY SHERMAN

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY JOE MEDINA & ANA PADILLA DIRECTED, EDITED & PRODUCED BY ROBERT TRUDELL

30) Arranged and aligned Credit Block, Opening Date and Tag line.

31) Found not enough memory to Export image to 300dpi jpg. Flattened artwork and saw background darkened too much making reading text difficult.

32) Added White background behind other background layers. Changed opacity of Trespass & Finger background objects to 50%. I think the previous opacity level was just for viewing?  I was going to try the fill.

33) Flattened Artwork again and while it darkened, I saw my desired result.  Tried to Export again and received “Insufficient Memory” message again.

34) Reduced Image Quality (10 Maximum -> 8 Maximum), Resolution (High 300dpi -> Screen 72) for jpg image Export. Image exported. Tried 150dpi export resolution. Worked at 150dpi also.

35) Saved files a TrudellFinalProject.ai, TrudellFinalProject.psd and TrudellFinalProject.psd

36) Submitted.

  • Design both sides of the board
Submit to Blackboard:
  • yournameBoard.ai
  • yournameBoard.jpg

> Tell me what techniques (i.e., the pen tool, live trace, etc.) you used – put that in the Blackboard Assignment window when you submit your files

1) I made a rough pencil sketch of my Taco Train concept design.  An artist friend refined my rough sketch.  I scanned the refined sketch and used it as a drawing template.

2) I outlined a skateboard to frame my drawing.

3) I used the pen tool to outline the fish.  I created individual scales and applied shaded gradients.  I used gradient colors for the main fish body and separate gradients for each fin.  I used paint brush tools to articulate the fin bones.

4) I outlined the Taco and applied a gradient color for shading.  I copied and re-sized the taco to place it into perspective on the railroad track.

5) I created a shadow and placed it under the fish.

6) I used a Live Trace of a pile of meatballs and created my own meatball pile.  Live Paint Bucket was also used in this process. I applied a Gaussian blur to each meatball. I made a meatball shadow and placed it under the pile.

7) I drew a straight railroad track.  I used the Perspective Grid, Perspective Selection and Transform tools to place the track in matching perspective.

8.) I used the Pen & Line Segment tools to draw the Bridge.

9) I enlarged a cutout of the Locomotive and did a Live Trace of it.  I use the Live Paint to make the outside areas and windows transparent. I outlined the Train with the Pen, Ellipse and Rectangle tools.

10) I created the OCEAN TO OCEAN, YUMA text and expanded it, then placed it on the Bridge using the Perspective Selection Tool and Transform to for proper adjustment.

11)  I used the Pathfinder tool and Minus Back to make the Eyeglasses transparent.

12) I used multiple Radial Gradient shading for the Eyeballs.

13) I overlayed the River with different opacity levels and shapes.

14) I used the Text path to write the properties of a Good Taco text.
