Noise Passby Backup Driver

I wish that coyote would quit tripping the photocells!

Rob Trudell smokes the SSR tires in reverse as he drives backward through the microphones during a Noise Test at the GM Desert Proving Ground in Mesa, Arizona.  The Superstition Mountains sit in the background as a hawk flys overhead along with a F-15C Eagle. Wildlife surrounds the scene with a pair of quail, a rattlesnake and coyote enjoy the relative isolation provided by the fenced desert oasis.

Okay, after looking though the work of most the photographers I think I like the playfulness of Gregory Scott the best.  There are several photos I’d like to try to reproduce from:  http://www.gregoryscottimages.com/impositions.php  I think I’ll try this Arrangement In Black

Artwork you want to reproduce

Why did you choose this particular artwork? How does this artist/artwork inspire you? I felt connected to the room, the doors, and the ability to demonstrate a surrealist idea in a B&W photo. I thought I could achieve a similar work while learning new techniques and gathering a better grasp of perspective and how to use it to tie things together. I’m inspired by the absurdity, cleverness, and humor Gregory Scott uses to comment on art as he displays his own. His methods remove barriers while using tried tested and true artistic guidelines.

What feeling and/or idea was the artist trying to express? How was it accomplished?

Gregory Scott identifies himself as a Painter and Photographer. He tells us his early paintings are often based on photographs and that the 2 mediums were always connected for him. The photo highlights his skill and power to use the 2 connected mediums to open a door, disconnect from their limitations and define a new art. As I notice the method he places his hand on his head and the Impositions title of the series, I consider Gregory symbolically anoints himself in this photo to confirm his graduation in learning and mastering this art form.

Where is the point of emphasis in the picture and what specific techniques does the artist use to make you look there? (Use of light, line, color, form, etc.)

Gregory uses Line in the wood flooring, the coaxial cables, the door openings, his hand gesture, the connections of perspective and line from the painting to the photos perspective to demonstrate his idea of connecting things to honestly and openly disconnect limitations they introduce.

Research Report Artist As Mentor

Gregory Scott’s photo, Disconnect, conveyed a feeling of connection with me to his room and his doors. Gregory’s ability to demonstrate a surrealistic idea in a Black & White photo inspires me.  I thought I could achieve a similar work while learning new techniques.  I chose to study Gregory to gather a better grasp of perspective and use it to tie things together.  I’m inspired by the absurdity, cleverness, and humor Gregory Scott uses to comment on art as he displays his own.  His methods remove barriers while using tried, tested, and true artistic guidelines.

Gregory sees himself as the Everyman; he explores and asks the “What if” question with himself.  Is he different inside if he is fatter or taller?  What if?  Gregory is driven to “capture emotional states such as laughter, loneliness, futility, desire, insecurity, confusion and play.”  His desire to show moments that elude verbal description are defined in asking thought provoking questions. His art demonstrates serious art doesn’t have to be serious.  He’s made the work accessible to all audiences.

Gregory Scott’s Imposition series showcases his discovery combining tightly cropped body part paintings into artistic photos.  They lead us through him placing the paintings in cleaver places and creating humorous scenes.  As he progresses the paintings evolve tailored fit for surrealistic scenes rather than just placed in and made to fit.  The spontaneous flippant seaside work leads him to a higher level of sophistication as he blends his legs into trees and the trees into his arms as branches.  While the lines and perspective blend together, he purposefully leaves the apparatus supporting the paintings visible. He maintains a level of honesty not always seen in sophisticated Photoshopped pictures.

In Gregory’s later work Contraventions and Outside the Frame, he seamlessly blends Flat Screen Video, Painting & Photography.  When art critic Doug McNash compares Scott’s work to Rene Magritte in a different time, I felt compelled to research Magritte as well.  Magritte stated images of men aren’t men so they don’t have to follow the rules of men.  Scott explores placing images in scenes we might not generally expect.  Most of the work is a commentary on art and illusion; he does takes from Refrigerator Art to Escher-esque perspective illusions. He woes a reclining nude painting as her feet move periodically and provides biting commentary of Thomas Kinkade’s perfect world as he is tossed out of his painted house.

I’d like to learn to introduce absurd, thought provoking and humorous art with the clever use of mixed media.  I want to follow Gregory’s exploratory nature and examine visual perspective, light and illusion to reveal concepts and show things that aren’t always seen.

Phone a Friend – The Secret Answer to Ping-Pong’s Popularity

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

While we all may know the answer, many realize, but few recognize the power and popularity that phoning friends provides Ping-Pong.  What condensed blurb do I share to increase the popularity of  Table Tennis? Like a deer in the headlights, I couldn’t for the life of me answer my interviewer’s Question.  I sat feeling like Sarah Palin in an interview with Katie Couric and remembering Tina Fey’s parody asking to “Phone a Friend” in help for the answer.  I wanted to blurt it out, but instead I searched and searched and provided little more than a shrug, a shake of the head and a toss of my hands in the air.

I finally admitted I couldn’t think of one.  I then went on, and on, and on about things I’d heard from others like it’s international following and how it brings cross cultural understandings and blah, blah, blah.  Of course while giving this answer I was thinking of The Answer Man’s response on increasing the popularity of Hardbat.  His answer to Scott Gordon is “Have Rob Trudell hire strippers as cheerleaders. I’ve spent hours imagining, demonstrating and following the attraction that bouncing breasts bring to the game.

Like many answers, the true answer came to me later that night after the interview; the answer touched me throughout my ping pong career.  Phoning friends always worked for me.  It’s more a pragmatic than a dramatic answer; it’s an answer that truly works.

Table Tennis takes 2 to make it right and building from that number is easy as pie.  Whether it’s Luis Houed, and I playing Ping Pong at Phoenix’s Playa Bar or Jay Turberville at Tucson’s Maloney’s Bar, bringing 1 friend to the table attracts others.  The Map to Popularity is simple, bring one and attract many.  The guarantee is there is always someone to play with.

In the desolate Yuma, Arizona desert Foothills, Luong Nguyen invokes “Phone a Friend” to conjure up another spell.  I first met Yuma’s Top Player, “Lou” at a Yuma Army Proving Ground (YPG) Double Elimination Tournament.  It’s with the Phone that Steve, the YPG Gym’s Morale, Welfare & Recreation Director, organizes the event.  Steve maintains a list of Tournament Players and their Phone Numbers; he calls the players in for specially scheduled matches that progress over weeks until the Final Elimination Match is held and Trophies are presented.  Luong contacted me directly to schedule our 1st YPG match and to check if he could get a ride back to the Foothills afterward.

Steve suggested once I met some local players, I’d find other places to practice and play.  Steve was right.  I surveyed Yuma for table tennis action and found nothing more than lonely tables in empty gyms.  There are tables at the Arizona Western College Recreation Center, the National Guard Armory, the Army YPG Gym and Yuma Marine Corp Air Station.  I also saw online the Criminals at Yuma Union High School  organized some sort of club.

Luong later invited me to play at Chuck Keller’s house with it’s dedicated Table Tennis Room and Sauna.  While the room has an air-conditioner, I think Chuck turns it off to prevent the wind from blowing the ball around.  I had a chance play Luong’s son, Liem and meet his other son Sam.  Luong coached the 2 for 2 years after they discovered the game and expressed an interest in improving.
